This composition by Rama Vaidyanathan explores the nuances of the mystical duality of Lord Krishna's persona on Earth. On one hand, he is a regular cowherd, relatable to the masses, while on the other, he is a divine avatar of Lord Vishnu the Protector. The performance draws from the legendary opera, the Sri Krishna Leela Tarangini, composed by the great 17th-century Saint, Sri Narayana Teertha. We observe the Divine Cowherd lead his flock to safety on a daily basis and draw parallels to how the Supreme Being does the same for all of humanity. Lord Krishna personifies his role as a deity in the firm yet light-hearted way in which he deals with his herd. His actions ensure that those under his gaze are forever protected and being led to safety. He is both an ordinary cowherd while being the divine entity tasked with protecting ordinary humans. The aplomb with which he commits to his tasks makes him worthy of being called the Divine Cowherd.
